Chaffee shines at Red Devil Invitational

CHAFFEE -- With 146 points on the boy's side and 124 points on the girl's, the hometown Chaffee Red Devils swept Thursday afternoon's Red Devil Invitational.

"We're just kind of gearing up now for districts," Chaffee coach Tyson Moyers said. "We have the conference meet on Monday so we're trying to get our kids to peak at the right time.

"Our goal for the last couple of years has been to try to get up there on the podium at state. The way we're running right now is not going to cut it, but hopefully we'll be getting better in the next couple of weeks."

On the boy's side, the Red Devils, with 146 points, easily outpaced second place Scott City who finished with 96. Malden claimed third with 95.

On the girl's side, the Lady Red Devils' 126 points left plenty of distance between them and New Madrid County Central, whose 93 points left them in second place. In third was Saxony Lutheran with 63.

Though a few schools had to drop out of the meet due to the recent flooding in the region, Moyers said he was pleased with the turnout.

"We would have liked to have had the whole squad here that we usually have," he said. "We normally have 13 or 14 teams and we had nine this year, which isn't bad. Jefferson came down from Festus and that was nice to see some new kids, some different kids from a different area."
