Lady Bearcats roll past Cape Central in two sets
DEXTER -- Back at home following a solid showing at the Notre Dame Volleyball Fest this past weekend, the Dexter Lady Bearcats picked up their sixth win of the season on Tuesday against the Cape Central Lady Tigers.
Though a few lapses led to brief Lady Tiger runs in each set, the Lady Bearcats broke out to big early leads in both games and were able to sweep the match 25-10, 25-9.
"We played pretty hard this weekend against some good competition," Dexter head coach Carmen Morgan said. "But we still haven't figured out how to come out and play our game and the way we have to play. Until we do that we're going to keep getting in trouble."
Cape Central's (1-6) only lead of night came when they opened up the first set taking two of the first three points. After that the Lady Bearcats were able to take control with a 9-1 run that included three kills from sophomore Jessica Lindsey and forced the Lady Tigers to take a timeout.
The time to regroup along with a pair of serving errors by Dexter allowed Cape Central to close back to within four points, at 11-7, before the Lady Bearcats once again took over.
Following the Lady Tigers' brief 3-1 run, Dexter reeled off 10 straight points, capping their un with an ace from sophomore Shyann Jines that moved them ahead 21-8.
Cape Central took the next two points, but Lindsey capped one final four-point Lady Bearcats with a kill win the set.
"Dexter was more organized tonight," Cape Central's head coach Angela Broshuis said. "We could run are offense when we have a decent pass and when we didn't we sent to many free balls (over the net)."
After allowing the Lady Tigers to hang close midway through the first game, Dexter opened the second set on a dominant 13-1 run that started with another kill from Lindsey.
The Lady Bearcats ended up taking the first six points before a bad volley put Cape Central on the board. It was after Dexter took the next seven points that the Lady Tigers burned a timeout to try and regroup.
Once again Cape Central came out of the break on a small run, taking three of the next four points. A bad serve, however, gave control back to Dexter who moved ahead on a 8-1 run to make it 23-5.
Making one last push the Lady Tigers won four of the next five points, but with Dexter at match-point a bad volley on Cape Central's end sealed a Lady Bearcat win.
"I'm not satisfied with the way it went," Morgan said, referring to a few lapses by her team. "I just let them go and said you know what you're suppose to do out here, now you have to start doing it.
"They will. We're just going to go back in, we need to get in the gym tomorrow and we'll work a little harder and try to shore up some things."
On the night the Lady Bearcats collected nine serving aces with Jines, Brittany Harris, Hannah Noe and Alyssa Spear each earning two.
Of the team's 23 kills, Lindsey easily led Dexter with 11 on the contest while Noe and Harris added five and three respectively.
Noe had a time high five digs with Jines and Lindsey adding three apiece the Lady Bearcats cause.
After going 2-2 at the Notre Dame VolleyballFest this weekend, Dexter's varsity now stands at 6-2 on the season. They'll host the New Madrid County Central Lady Eagles on Thursday with junior varsity action starting at 6 p.m.
In Tuesday night's junior varsity contest Dexter also pulled off the sweep with the Lady Bearcats beating Cape Central 25-7, 25-13.
