SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Lawrence Johsens, born Nov. 10, 1930, in Oakland, Calif., the son of German immigrants, died Sept. 6, 2012, at the Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz from a heart attack following a recent surgery.

He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1953 and began his teaching career at McClymonds High School in Oakland. He spent the majority of his career teaching English at Saratoga High School, retiring in 1985.

On June 30, 1983, he married Barbara Jeanne Boyce who survives. Other survivors include: three children, Kai Johsens (David) Billmaier, Karl (Hualalai) Johsens and Hans (Donna) Johsens; Barbara's four children, Diane Moore, Mark Moore, Michael Moore and Mary (Stu) Barragan; his many grandchildren, Anna, Parker, Nainoa, Emmy, Kauwila, Kody, Leahi, Kapailani, Andria, Stephen, Jacob, Mahrysa, Hunter, Olivia, Luke, Taylor and Jordan; and two brothers-in-law, Dr. Bill (Marilyn) Boyce and Fred Steward of Sikeston, Mo., and a sister-in-law, Charlotte Boyce Craig of Gordonville, Mo.

Services will be held from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Sept. 30, 2012, at Lighthouse Point in Santa Cruz with a reception following.
