JEFFERSON CITY -- Sikeston senior Kyland Gross finished third in the long jump Friday during the Class 3 state track and field meet in Jefferson City.

After two events went final, the Sikeston boys team are seventh overall in points following the first day at Dwight T. Reed Stadium on the campus of Lincoln University.

Gross jumped 21-feet, 1-inch in the long jump. He fell to Mt. Vernon's Shane Williams, who claimed the championship with a jump of 22-5. Maryville's Peyton Mizera took second with a 21-11.

The other final the Bulldogs were apart of Friday was the high jump where Tyler McClinton finished tied for fifth with a jump of 6-2. Landon Bartel of Southern Boone won the event with 6-8.

In the preliminary portion of Friday, Sikeston qualified for the finals, which will be ran Saturday, in three events.

All three of the Bulldogs' relay teams made the cut.

The defending champion 4x200 relay team, consisting of Steven Baker, Spenser Clark, Gross and Nick Nichols, ran a 1:29.05 and finished second in their heat behind Grandview. Sikeston will be seeded third in the finals.

That same team in the 4x100 relay event took first in their preliminary heat after posting a time of 43.33. Sikeston is seeded second behind Grandview (43.03) for the finals.

The 4x400 relay team (Deterio Newman, Nick Nichols, Zach Harrison, Steven Baker) finished second in their heat after a time of 3:26.44 and will be seeded fifth in the finals.

Baker missed the cut in the 100-meter dash after a time of 11.43 seeded him 10th. Clark also missed qualifying in the 300-meter hurdles with a 41.95 placed him 12th in the prelims.

As a team, Sikeston sits with seventh place after the first day with 8.5 points.

On the girls side, Sikeston's Allisha Oglesby finished 12th in the triple jump with a leap of 34-0 1/2.

Both 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams failed to qualify for the finals after finishing 11th and 10th, respectively. Brandy Peet also missed the qualifying cut in the 200-meter dash finishing 15th with a time of 27.04.

New Madrid County Central's Rashaundra Summers finished second in the shot put after throwing 40-feet, 9-inches. Summers improved on her fourth place finish from state last season as a sophomore.

Dexter's Makayla Waldner made the finals in both the 100 and 300-meter hurdle events.

Waldner finished with a fourth seed in the 100-hurdles with a time of 15.89. She will be seeded sixth in the 300-hurdles after running 46.36.

Final results will be in the Tuesday edition of the Standard Democrat.
