Dangerous situation: Couple trapped in overturned vehicle Monday

A couple became trapped when their vehicle overturned in a water-filled ditch following a collision with a convertible at 2111 E. Malone Avenue around 2:20 p.m. Monday. According to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, a convertible on Marian attempted to turn into westbound Malone but stalled and was hit in the rear left fender by an SUV traveling east on Malone. The SUV left the roadway, bottomed out on a bridge and overturned on the side of the ditch. When officers from the Department of Public Safety arrived, passers-by were attempting to hold the vehicle from turning over. DPS stabilized the vehicle and the driver was able to climb out the back however, the passenger complained of back pain prompting officials to want to keep her from moving any more than possible. After about 45 minutes, emergency personnel were able to free her from the vehicle to be taken to Missouri Delta Medical Center. No other injuries were reported.
