2013 Missouri Building Block Picture Book Award

SIKESTON - Maybe they can't read yet, but they know what they like.

On Wednesday, preschoolers identified the animals as children's librarian Ann Thompson read from a book. They growled. They oinked. They waved their arms like an elephant's trunk.

That involvement from the youngest readers, said Thompson, is part of what makes a good children's book.

Now, these children, their parents and other young readers from across the state will help pick the Missouri Building Block Picture Book Award. Thompson is introducing the 10 nominees (see sidebar) by the Missouri Library Association to youngsters over the next several weeks...
