CHARLESTON -- Charleston Public School students will again have the chance to do some college exploration thanks to an annual grant.

Hunter Moore of Charleston presented a $1,000 check to Lester Gillespie, director of the Charleston Community 2000 program, Friday at the Bowden Center in Charleston for the third Sy Williams Annual Award for Education.

"We set it up in 2010 and the first award was in spring of 2011," Moore said. "It is given to a program that benefits Charleston Public School students. Every year it generates enough interest for this $1,000 gift -- that was the intention. There is enough in (the fund) that if the interest rates are even pretty low it should replenish itself."

The award's namesake, Sylas "Sy" Williams, was born Nov. 20, 1841, on the Moore family's plantation in Mississippi County, the son of slave parents.
