SIKESTON -- Enrollment in the Sikeston R-6 School District is up over 30 students from last month -- and five students more than when the school year began.

An update on the district's enrollment was given during Tuesday's regular monthly Board of Education meeting.

"The good news this month is we are up 31 students so that is very positive," said Superintendent Tom Williams.

On Feb. 3, enrollment in grades K-12 was at 3,460 students. By comparison, enrollment was at 3,429 in January; 3,442 in December; 3,449 in November; 3,446 in October; and 3,455 in September.

"Primarily the spike was that of our elementary kids, and that looks very promising," Williams said.

Enrollment in grades K-6 increased from a total of 1,928 in January to 1,951 in February. The Fifth and Sixth Grade Center saw an increase of seven students, and Southeast Elementary and Lee Hunter each had an increase of six students. Matthews Elementary saw an increase of three students. The Kindergarten Center's enrollment jumped by one student.

The district's school board members: Amy Blanton, president; Deke Lape, vice president; Scott Crumpecker; Jim Gleason; Chris Hodgkiss; David Jones; and Rebecca Steward, were recognized Tuesday for Missouri School Board Recognition Week, which was observed Jan. 26 through Feb. 1.
