SIKESTON -- Looking to give the property a facelift along with routine maintenance, the Friends of Camp Latonka group will host a work day open to the public this weekend.

The "clean-up" day at camp in Wappapello will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday.

"We'll go until we're tired or done -- either one," said Gabbie Hodgkiss of Morehouse, who is also the program chair of the board for "Save Camp Latonka."

Lunch will be provided, and it's open to anyone who wants to help, she said. They do not have to be a Girl Scout and can just show up at the camp on Saturday.

"Some of the things we'll be working on are re-screening cabins, repairing doors to the latrines, replacing boards in the cabin on the dining hall," Hodgkiss said. "We'll also be cleaning, leaf raking, rocking paths, cleaning all of the debris around the cabin."

Over the past year some of the Girl Scouts councils were asked to downsize for financial reasons, and Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland was one of those, Hodgkiss recalled.
