SIKESTON -- Bureaucrats are now passing down stricter regulations faster than communities can build facilities to comply -- if they can even afford to, that is.

A letter from the New Madrid County Missouri Mayors Association signed by 15 mayors and the New Madrid County Commission sent to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources dated Feb. 21 expresses local concerns regarding new regulations for ammonia discharges from municipal wastewater treatment systems.

The new regulations, handed down as a federal mandate from the Environmental Protection Agency, are "being foisted upon the State of Missouri and our communities under the guise of protecting mussels and other aquatic species, but as we understand it, have very little, if any, scientific basis," according to the letter.
