Sloppy night makes for low scores, tough rides during round two of rodeo

SIKESTON -- Though fans enjoyed a rain free night Thursday at the 62nd annual Sikeston Jayvee Bootheel Rodeo, thunderstorms earlier in the day left competitors dealing with soupy conditions.

The effects were evident especially in the bull riding as only 2 of 13 entrants were able to post a score.

Howdy Cloud's ride earned him an 84 which left him on top of the leaderboard for the night. Trevor Reiste was the only other rider able to hold on the required eight seconds. His 81 was good for second place.

In barrel racing, several participants decided to scratch rather than try their horses' luck on the mud, leaving only three women to run. Alison Ragatz took first with a run of 16.92 seconds while Sikeston native Carrie Potashnick was close behind with a time of 17.18 seconds to claim second.

Julie Erkamaa finished in 18.01 seconds for third place.

Ryan Von Ahn and J.W. Beck won the team roping event with a run of 5.8 seconds. The team of Jake Cooper and Tyler McKnight beat out Clay Smith and Jake Smith by two-tenths of a second for second place with a time of 6.3 seconds.

The tie down roping competition was won by Cody Jordan with a time of 9.2 seconds and second-place finisher Bill Huber posting a distant run of 15.4 seconds.

Jace Allen Angus edged out Cody DeMoss by a point to win the saddle bronc riding event with a ride of 83. Joe Lufkin's 79 left him in third place.

In steer wrestling, Weston Winker posted a run of 4.3 seconds to win the event with Jake Thomas' time of 4.6 seconds good for second place.

Orin Larsen scored a 90 to win the bareback riding competition while Richmond Champion and Bill Tutor posted rides of 85 and 81 respectively.
