Green Wave roll past Portageville 54-7

PORTAGEVILLE -- The Portageville Bulldogs' season-opening streak of eight straight quarters without allowing a point came to end and then some Friday night.

The Malden Green Wave, ranked No. 8 in Class 2 in the most recent media poll, scored touchdowns on their first six possessions and seven out of nine drives total in a 54-7 victory in SEMO South play.

Malden starts the season 3-0 for the first time since 2006 while Portageville drops to 2-1.

All seven Malden touchdowns came on the ground.

Dremond Robinson had a 9-yard touchdown on the Green Wave's opening drive. Jeremy Jones made it 14-0 Green Wave with an 8-yard rush with 4:48 left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Nick Thompson had a 42-yard touchdown run followed by a 51-yarder by Robinson.

Cortez Dobbins had a 7-yard score and Thompson rumbled in from 48 yards away to make it 40-0 at halftime.

Dobbins then opened the second half by returning the kickoff 82 yards to make it 46-0.

Portageville put together a long drive against Malden's second unit defense as quarterback Jon Garrett Kellams ran in a 3-yard touchdown at the 2:49 mark of the third quarter.

Malden junior Tyler Currie closed out scoring with a 30-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Malden led in total yardage on that night at 485 to 140. The Green Wave had 460 yards on the ground.

Malden hosts Scott City (2-1) next Friday while Portageville travels to Piggott (Ark.) to take on the Mowhawks.
