PREP ROUNDUP: Portageville volleyball leads the way at Gideon, Sikeston volleyball notches win

GIDEON -- Portageville, New Madrid County Central and Charleston all advanced to the tournament portion of the Gideon Volleyball Tournament while Richland fell just short in pool play Thursday night.

Portageville defeated Delta C-7 (25-9, 25-13), Cooter (25-21, 25-16) and then split with NMCC (25-15, 22-25) to advance to Saturday's tournament play while the Lady Eagles split with Cooter (24-26, 25-13) and swept Delta C-7 (25-21, 25-15).

Charleston split with Hayti (25-17, 21-25) and Richland (18-25) before taking out South Pemiscot in two sets. Richland was unable to advance to Saturday's tournament play despite not losing a match. The Lady Rebels swept South Pemiscot 25-21, 26-24 and split with Hayti 3-25, 25-22.

Pool play continues tonight in Gideon with tournament play starting at 11 a.m. Saturday with the championship scheduled for 2 p.m.

__Sikeston 2, Scott City 0__

SIKESTON -- Rebounding from back-to-back losses earlier this week, the Sikeston Lady Bulldogs pulled off a two-set sweep of visiting Scott City on Thursday, 25-15, 25-18.

Esther Chinwuko led the way with seven kills while Olivia Nash and Sadera Williams contributed five and four kills respectively.

Lauren Beydler totaled three kills with Morgan Merrill and Laryssa McClellan adding two kills each to their team's cause.

Beydler also had a game-high 20 assists and two aces with Chinwuko and Hannah Cooper collecting an ace each.

Earlier in the night the Lady Bulldogs' junior varsity also picked up a sweep, beating the Lady Rams junior varsity 25-14, 25-17.

Now at 3-8-1, Sikeston will travel to Charleston on Monday to play the Lady Bluejays at 6 p.m.

__Kennett 9, Sikeston 0__

The Sikeston girls tennis team suffered a tough road loss to the Kennett Lady Indians on Thursday 9-0.

Ali Price was the only singles competitor able to get a point against Kennett. Sikeston combined for two points in doubles competition.

In junior varsity action the Lady Bulldogs fell 5-0.

Sikeston will host Charleston Monday at 4 p.m.
