NEW MADRID - The Bass Pro Big Cat Quest National Championship isn't just bringing in fishing teams from across the United States from Oct. 2-5, it is also drawing the national media. There will be writers and photographers from such magazines as "Field and Stream" and Bill Dance will film a segment for his television show "Bill Dance's Outdoors" as he competes for honors.

Now, city officials are asking for the public's help to ensure the community looks its best for the visitors. On Saturday, the city is planning a communitywide Beautification Day.

"This is our opportunity to put our best foot forward," said New Madrid City Administrator Chad Eggen.

While city crews are already busy mowing and painting, Eggen is in hopes the public will pitch in with the beautification efforts.

Already a variety of groups have taken on tasks for the day. According to Eggen, several community organizations, school groups and Scout troops will tackle projects on Saturday.

Individuals can also join in the effort by signing up between 8-8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Community Building on Mill Street. Eggen said volunteers need only commit two hours of their time.

"We want to show our pride in our community," he said. "This is our community and we want it to look good."

After assigned a task, Eggen said the City will provide the tools including gloves, trash bags, bug spray, weedeaters, blowers, etc.

Those with questions can contact City Hall at 748-2866.
