NEW MADRID -- An attempt by a burglar to hide his crime by destroying a business surveillance system failed.

Charges were filed against Rex A. Wells of Lilbourn for second degree burglary and theft/ stealing following an investigation by the New Madrid Police Department.

On Sept. 16, police officers received a report of a burglary at a business on Highway 61 in New Madrid.

According to Chief of Police Joey Higgerson, the suspect entered through a back door and stole a monitor and DVR from the store's surveillance system.

After searching the area, an officer found the stolen DVR and a pair of gloves in the alley behind the business.
