SIKESTON -- City employees volunteering an hour of their own time to pick up litter will demonstrate how easy it can be to make Sikeston a more beautiful city.

This, and several other ideas of how to beautify Sikeston, were discussed during the Sikeston City Council's first monthly study session Thursday.

"It was a short agenda. It was mostly talking about litter and how we are going to approach some ways to clean it up -- including an effort to get the community involved," Mayor Jerry Pullen said. "We want to encourage everyone to clean up their trash instead of throwing it on the ground."

Pullen said employees who decide to participate in the litter collection effort will gather on the parking lot of Burch Foods on School Street at 2 p.m. Oct. 26 to pick up trash along School Street and Stalcup.

This should "let people know there's an effort needed to keep our city cleaner," Pullen said. "We would like to approach the schools, get churches involved with it, too."

City Clerk Carroll Couch said another idea discussed was joining the Keep America Beautiful organization.
