Locals help rewrite learning standards
SIKESTON -- A Sikeston teacher and parent who've been vocal about their opposition to Common Core are helping to write Missouri's learning standards.
Tonya Pobst, a Sikeston R-6 fifth grade teacher, and Heather Drury, who has school-aged children in Sikeston, were each appointed to work groups charged with creating goals for students that prepare them for college and careers.
Eight groups are developing standards for four subject areas: social studies, math, English/language arts and science -- one for grades K-5 and the other for grades 6-12.
Some group members were picked by lawmakers who opposed Common Core, while others were chosen by Gov. Jay Nixon, who signed the 2009 agreement to help develop the Common Core standards in Missouri.
