PORTAGEVILLE -- Approval of a half-cent sales tax would pave the way for a smoother ride in Portageville.
In addition to voting for state and county officials on Nov. 4, Portageville residents will decide whether to approve a sales tax of one half of 1 percent for the purpose of funding capital improvements. The tax will end after 10 years.
Mayor Denis McCrate said the tax would raise $145,000 to $148,000 annually. He and the City Council have earmarked the money for street resurfacing.
"We haven't repaved streets in the last six years and the last few winters have been hard on the streets," said McCrate. "Before they totally fall apart we had better fix them."
