SIKESTON -- Another opportunity to enjoy fine wine and fine dining while supporting a worthy cause is right around the corner.
"Celebrating the USO with Altrusa" is the theme for Altrusa International of Sikeston's 14th annual dinner auction scheduled Nov. 8 at the Clinton Building in Sikeston.
Always on the lookout for a good theme for the annual event, Sikeston Altrusa members noticed the James S. McDonnell USO recently at the Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, according to Linda Myers, treasurer for Altrusa in Sikeston.
"Our motto is 'Patriotism, Efficiency and Service' so we try to keep that in mind," said Melissa Eakins, service chairman for the Sikeston Altrusa chapter. "We came up with the idea to honor the USO of Missouri."
Established in 1941, United Service Organizations is a private, nonprofit organization most remembered for its entertainment tours during the World War II and Korean War eras featuring Bob Hope, Marilyn Monroe and other celebrities.
Disbanded in 1947, the USO was revived in 1950 and continues to provide programs, services and live entertainment to U.S. troops and their families in both times of war and peace.
The evening will begin with a wine tasting provided by Barrens Winery of Perryville scheduled at 6 p.m.
"This is the first year we've had them," Myers said.
