Parma man killed in accident

PARMA -- A Parma man died Wednesday after his vehicle was struck by a tractor-trailer early Tuesday in New Madrid County.

Charles A. Powell, 64, of Parma was pronounced dead at 10:22 a.m. Wednesday at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Powell was traveling southbound on Missouri Highway 153, a half a mile south of Parma, at 6:35 a.m. Tuesday when a southbound tractor-trailer attempted to pass his vehicle as Powell was making a left-hand turn, according to Missouri State Highway Patrol. The tractor-trailer then struck Powell's vehicle.

Powell and his passenger-wife, Sherra A. Rayburn, 54, who received serious injuries, were initially flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital. The driver of the tractor-trailer received minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene.
