Dons knock out Portageville in consolation seimfinals
BLOOMFIELD -- Lucas Moe had 14 of his team-high 20 points in the first half to propel Doniphan to a 16 point lead at halftime. The No. 14 Dons held the margin in the second half and won 66-47 to upset No. 11 Portageville Saturday to advance to the consolation semifinals at the Bloomfield Christmas Tournament.
Doniphan freshman Klay Barton hit three 3-pointers and finished with 15 points. Doniphan held No. 11 Portageville to less than 10 points in both the second and third quarters. Portageville scored 22 points in the fourth thanks to three 3-pointers from Luke Darst, but the Dons answered as seven different scorers contributed to 18 fourth-quarter points.
Puxico 79, Van Buren 54 It was a two-man show in the first half. Puxico senior Zack Tucker had 20 of his 28 points Zach Griffin put up 21 of his 26 points for Van Buren.
Puxico had a six-point lead at halftime and Van Buren lost ground in the third quarter after it scored eight points.
Freshman Levi Woods had just as many points for Puxico as the Indians built a 20-point lead at the buzzer.
Seth Luttrull went 6-for-6 on free throws and finished with 17 points for Puxico. Woods added 14. Todd Wilcoxon had 10 points for Van Buren.
Doniphan will play Puxico in the consolation semifinals Monday at 2:30 p.m.
Saxony Lutheran 79, Richland 65 Freshman Graesen Meystedt had 16 points in the fourth quarter for No. 9 Saxony Lutheran on Saturday to lead the team to the consolation semifinals of the Bloomfield Christmas Tournament.
The Crusaders scored 35 points in the fourth quarter and Meystedt had 21 in the game. Preston Tilley led No. 16 Richland with 19 points and Marcus Grayson added 16.
East Prairie 70, Holcomb 44 The No. 12 Hornets were limited to two points in the third quarter. The 13th-seeded Eagles scored 20 between seven different players and took a 62-24 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Brandon Evans led East Prairie with 18 points. Seth Bays got 13 and Deverance Jones added 10. Skyler Johnson had eight points for Holcomb, all in the fourth quarter.
East Prairie and Saxony Lutheran play 2:30 p.m. Monday in the consolation semifinals.

Championship quarterfinal action slated for Saturday includes: top-seeded Hayti vs. No. 8 seeded South Pemiscot at 4 p.m., No. 4 seeded Bernie vs. No. 5 seeded Twin Rivers at 5:30 p.m., No. 2 seeded Malden vs. No. 7 seeded Bloomfield at 7 p.m. and No. 3 seeded Kennett vs. No. 6 seeded Dexter at 8:30 p.m.
Consolation quarterfinals scheduled for Saturday at the double-elimination tournament are: No. 12 seeded Holcomb vs. No. 13 seeded East Prairie at 10 a.m., No. 10 seeded Puxico vs. No. 15 seeded Van Buren at 11:30 a.m., No. 11 seeded Portageville vs. No. 14 seeded Doniphan at 1 p.m. and No. 9 seeded Saxony Lutheran vs. No. 16 seeded Richland at 2:30 p.m.
No. 6 seeded Dexter led wire to wire in a 62-47 victory against No. 11 seeded Portageville.
Dexter scored the first eight points of the first quarter and the final nine points of the first half to build a 31-11 lead by halftime.
"I was real pleased with our effort and energy tonight," Dexter coach Josh Dowdy said. "We came out determined to play good basketball. I was real happy how we set some traps early, made them play at a pace they didn't seem real comfortable with and executed well.
"I told them before the game 'the statistic that was going to decide this game we rebounding,"' Dowdy added. "I thought we contested shots and did a tremendous job keeping Garmon and Priggel off the glass. I knew they were going to be a pretty good team if we allowed them second-chance opportunities, and we didn't the first half."
Portageville hit four of its six 3-pointers in the fourth period and got as close as 49-41 with 2:21 left in regulation.
Kynan Mosby finished with five treys and a team-high 16 points for Portageville. Derrick Priggel added 13 more points for Portageville.
Dexter sophomore guard Jason Jarrell hit a field goal in every quarter and finished with a game-high 21 points.
"Jason comes in early in the morning and works with coach Williamson on his one-on-one moves," Dowdy said. "It's nice to see hard work pay off for both Jason and coach Williamson."
Austin Chesser went 8 of 8 from the free throw line.
In Saturday's consolation game with Doniphan, the Portageville Bulldogs lost, 66-47.
