DEXTER -- Dexter Fire Chief Don Seymore is hoping for at least a little bit of rest going into this week. The Dexter Fire Department had quite a busy Saturday, as they had to fight two fires.
The first call came in at 7:57 a.m., at the residence of Marilyn Smith at 18413 Twelve Oak Terrace. According to Seymore, the fire was a result of an electric outlet in the kitchen that had shorted.
"We aren't sure what wiring issues were present that caused the fire," Seymore explained. "Nothing was plugged into the outlet, so we just don't know at this point."
Seymore said the resulting fire spread to the kitchen cabinets; but, the firefighters were able to keep the flames contained to the kitchen.
"There was some fire damage to the cabinets," Seymore commented. "There was also some smoke damage, but the fire didn't get beyond the kitchen."
Seymore said the fire is still under investigation.
Just a few hours later, though, the Dexter Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire at 12487, County Road 657.
"That one was a total loss," Seymore remarked. "There wasn't much we could do with that one."
According to Seymore, a passing motorist saw smoke coming from the attic and alerted the fire department.
"No one was in the house at the time," Seymore said. "The homeowners were out and about. So, there were no injuries."
Seymore went on to explain that fire fighters were on the scene for approximately three hours; but the home could not be saved from the fire.
The residence belongs to Dustin Whitaker; and Seymore said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
"That fire is also under investigation," Seymore remarked. "As far as we know, there wasn't anything preventable in either of the two fires."
No injuries were reported in either of the two fires.
