Sikeston downs Dexter 13-1 in previously delayed game
SIKESTON -- It's not often that when a team steps on the field for the first time in an afternoon they already have eight runs on the board.
That's exactly the spot the Sikeston Bulldogs found themselves in, however, when they picked up a previously delayed game against visiting Dexter on Monday.
Sikeston drove in another five runs to end the game in five innings, 13-1, via the mercy rule.
"I wish they could all start out like that," Bulldogs' head coach Alan Scheeter said. "It'd make things a lot easier and our record a lot better."
Monday's contest picked up after rain forced a suspension to April 13, which was called off in the bottom of the third inning.
The Bulldogs (9-7) resumed play with an 8-0 lead and runners on second and third base with two outs.
An infield pop up got the Bearcats (6-9) out of the jam before they came up to bat in the top of the fourth, where they plated a run to close the gap to seven at 8-1.
Sikeston wasted little time in responding. After two unsuccessful bunt attempts, Cody Rodgers hit a ground ball up the middle to plate a pair of runners in the bottom of the fourth.
A bases-loaded line drive to left centerfield by Blake Wolferding soon after brought home two more runners to put the mercy-rule in effect.
Luke Williams plated one final run to give the Bulldogs a 13-1 advantage.
"I don't know what it was, but we saw the ball well today," Scheeter said. "We hit some, didn't really scorch a lot of them, but just hit it right back up the middle. Wolf got on top of one and hit a line drive up the gap. We came out ready to go."
Nathan Hampton took the mound in the top of the fifth and allowed a single before a strikeout and double play ended the game.
Wolferding finished with a game-high three hits to lead Sikeston while Audie Hay, Luke Williams, Trey Smith and Rodgers contributed two hits each. Hay and Jacob Clark each doubles.
For Dexter, Colton Averett and Trevor McDonald each singled.
"Anytime you come out and are eight runs in the hole it's not a good thing," Bearcats' head coach Brian Becker said. "It is what it is and we just have to keep getting better."
Sikeston will host Notre Dame Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
