Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6
A few weeks ago I needed to get gas and stopped at Casey's and gas was $1.91 a gallon, so I filled up. Just a few days later as I drove by Casey's gas was $2.14 a gallon and I thought to myself, "I don't understand how in just a few days time the gas price jumps like that."
As I thought about the change in the price of gas over such a short span this scripture from Proverbs 3 came to mind. As I thought even more, I realized that there are a lot of things that I do not understand on my own. Often times when we are young, usually when we are teenagers, we think we have this life thing figured out, but as we age we realize that we don't understand everything.
As a pastor I spend many hours thinking about, praying about, pondering how can we get more people to come to church and became disciples for Jesus Christ? Why is it that after September 11, 2001 that the churches in America filled up for five weeks, and then started dropping in attendance? Now 14 years later attendance has continued to drop? I don't understand.
I have talked with people that say when they get to heaven they are going to ask God some burning questions that they have, that they desire an answer to. I do not believe that when we get into heaven that our questions are going to be as important as they are to us right now. I believe that we will be so overcome with joy and thankfulness that we will forget all the questions we wanted to ask.
Right now there are hundreds of things that we might not understand but God said that we are to trust in him with all our heart. That we do not have to lean on our own understanding. We are to acknowledge who he I, and tell others about him and he will make our paths straight.
Therefore I do not have to understand what the purpose of the mosquito is, because believe me, I really have no idea why Noah did not finish them off in the Ark. I do not have to understand why people struggle so much in trusting God, when we see his goodness and grace all around us daily. My job, and your job, as disciples is to trust and to acknowledge and God will make a straight way.
