BENTON -- The Scott County Genealogy and Historical Society is celebrating 35 years by putting out their welcome mat.
A celebration of the Society's anniversary will be held at 2 p.m. Nov 8.
"We've been working on it since March, officially, but we started talking about it probably over a year ago," said Vicki LeGrand, event chair for the anniversary celebration. "It's not a lot of trouble to plan -- we have a committee working on it. It's going to be simple but nice."
Jamie Burger, presiding Scott County commissioner, will offer some opening remarks after which Jim Simmons, Benton's mayor, will speak, according to LeGrand.
One of the Historical Society's charter members, Mary McArthur, has said she will be the final speaker if she is able to attend.
"Our plan is to keep it short and sweet -- we will meet in the courtroom and have some people talk, 15 to 20 minutes," LeGrand said.
Following the speakers, Historical Society members will visit in the lobby to answer questions about the displays they will have there and the Society in general, she said.
"The first meeting, their organizational meeting, was Nov. 15, 1980, at the Morley Community Building," said Margaret Heuring, treasurer for the Historical Society.
