NEW MADRID, Mo. -- Jonathan G. Weeks, 33, of New Madrid is in custody after his arrest Thursday on a charge of rape/attempted rape and other felony charges.

According to the probable cause statement, a New Madrid police officer responded to a a residence at 5:17 a.m. Wednesday in reference to a burglary. When he arrived, the victim stated that she had felt her comforter moving, and before she could see why, someone wrapped the sheets around her head. She wrestled with him until they fell to the floor where he then attempted to remove her underwear and roll her to her stomach. After begging for him to stop, she asked to go to the bathroom and he led her there with the sheet wrapped so tightly around her head it was restricting her breathing.

After reaching the bathroom, the victim grabbed a knife from a drawer and threatened to stab the suspect, to which he replied, "I'm Jonathan Weeks, don't hurt me." After threatening him again, he ran out the door.

Keys and a wallet that contained a Social Security card and a credit card for Weeks was found on the kitchen table by officers. Weeks' car was found at the Ramey's parking lot and surveillance video from Ramey's showed Weeks walking away from the parking lot to an apartment building. Shortly thereafter, the video shows him fleeing.

Weeks, a registered sex offender, was arrested by the New Madrid Police Department on a first degree felony charge of rape or attempted rape, a first degree felony charge of burglary and a charge of felonious restraint.

Bond is set at $150,000 cash only.

As of press time, he remained in custody in the Pemiscot County Jail.
