Portageville Bulldogs win one, lose one

Portageville's Ian Torrey started off at the mound last Thursday hosting the Caruthersville Tigers.

The Portageville Bulldogs played a tight game against Caruthersville last Thursday, but Caruthersville pulled out the 21-9 victory. The game was tied at eight with Caruthersville batting in the top of the fourth when Taylor Moses singled off of Bailey Cook, driving in two runs.

The Bulldogs collected nine hits and Caruthersville had 14 in the high-scoring affair.

Caruthersville took the lead for good with 12 runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth, Seth Faulker singled off of Ian Torrey, driving in two runs. Pryce Strawn hit a grand slam off of Bailey Cook, driving in four runs, there was an error, scoring one run, and Faulker singled off of Cook, driving in one run, and Charles Golliday singled off of Cook, driving in two runs.

"Thursday night was a tough night and really disappointing," said Portageville coach Tyler Trover.

"Our mental toughness is just not where it needs to be in order to be a team that competes with teams like Caruthersville right now."

"We have good kids and we are going to continue working hard to make improvements. It is a process and we hit a bump in the road, but there are a lot of positives that have been shown from this group in our first eight games. We will get back to the drawing board and continue to work on improving each and every day,” he added.

Portageville scored six runs in the second inning.Their big inning was driven by a home run by Connor Barham, a home run by Ryan Priggel, a home run by Hunter Gates, and a home run by Torrey.

Home runs for the Bulldogs came when Nick Allred homered in the first inning,Priggel homered in the second inning, Barham homered in the second inning, Gates homered in the second inning, and Torrey homered in the second inning.

Home runs for Caruthersville came when Strawn homered in the fourth inning and David Cook homered in the fifth inning.

Portageville is 6-2 for the season and has three on the road game this week.

Last Tuesday, the Portageville Bulldogs defeated Gideon, 8-4, when Hunter Gates smacked a home run.

Both Gates and Priggel finished with two hits and three RBIs. Nick Allred and Kile Adams also had two hits for Portageville, who had 10 hits as a team.

Connor Barham picked up the pitching win after four innings on the hill. He gave up one run and four walks while striking out eight on 65 pitches.
