CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Richard M. Scheffer, 53, died at 12:46 p.m. April 9, 2017, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Oct. 23, 1963, to the late John Henry Scheffer Sr. and Rita M. Scheffer. He had lived in Mississippi County his entire life except when attending college. He was the co-owner and editor of the Mississippi County Times and Scheffer Printing and a member of St. Henry Catholic Church.
A 1982 graduate of Charleston High School, he attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and graduated in August 1988 with a double major in English and journalism.
In July 5, 1997, he married Bonnie M. Burton, who survives of the home.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Catherine; and three brothers, John Henry Scheffer Jr., Greg T. Scheffer and Francis X. Scheffer.
Surviving are: two brothers: Charles Scheffer of Greensboro, N.C., and Stephen (Darlene) Scheffer of Fort Worth, Texas; five sisters: Ruth Ellen (Larry) Kollmeyer of Minneapolis, Minn., Mary Sue (Jim) Geraghty of Greensboro, N.C., Mary Rita (Robert) Mashburn of Charleston, Rose Mary (Bill) Lund of Minneapolis, Minn., and Alice (TM) Harvell of Jackson. He is also survived by two special nieces that he helped raise Janica (Sean) Hall of Charleston and Jamie (Kenneth) Bailey of Bertrand. Peyton Brannon and Harper Bailey called him "PawPaw." Other survivors include many nieces, nephews, close friends, his Knights of Columbus brothers and many others.
Visitation was from 4-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at McMikle Funeral Home. Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. and led by the Knights of Columbus.
Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Henry Catholic Church in Charleston. The Rev. Patrick Ike Nwokoye, pastor, served as celebrant.
Interment followed at Calvary Cemetery near Charleston.
Pallbearers were: Kenneth Bailey, Seth Stephenson, Jack Augliar, Evan Burton, Nathaniel Burton, Sean Hall, Ryan Heaton, Nathaniel Harvell and Lan Brandon.
Honorary pallbearers were: Chris Dugan, Chuck Simmons, Dan Stephenson, TM Harvell, Curtis McCatrey, Mike Mix, Lester Cockrum, Shannon Butler, Leo Schott, George Pazdera, Bill Lund, Robert Mashburn, Jim Geraghty, Larry Kollmeyer, James Thomas, Tracy Lee, Charlie Samons and Derek Thomas.
