CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Etta Mae Johnson, 93, formerly of Charleston, died Sept. 1, 2017, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau,.

Born Nov. 19, 1923, in Caruthersville, to the late John Richard Yarbery and Helen Cook Cummings, she was a cook with the Charleston R-1 School District for many years. She was also a member of Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church in Charleston and a missionary, deaconess and mother of the church.

In April 1940 in Swift, she married George Johnson and he preceded her in death.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, James Yarbery and A.W. Yarbery; and two sisters, Johnnie Mae Bracy and Georgia Yarbery.

Survivors include: one sister, Leanna McElmurry of Cape Girardeau.

Visitation is from 11 a.m. until service time at noon Wednesday at Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. J. L. Posey officiating.

Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Williams Funeral Home of Charleston is in charge of arrangements.
