WAKE FOREST, N.C. -- Homer Dale Stanfill (Stan), 72, of Wake Forest, N.C., passed away on Oct. 26, 2017, at Duke Raleigh Hospital with his wife, Doris "Gale" Carter Stanfill, by his side.
He was born at the St. Francis Hospital in Cambridge, Ohio, to the late Homer Dewey and Lillian Lucille Tudor Stanfill. He was predeceased by his older brother, William Alvin and his younger brother, David Duane, and is survived by his wife of over 45 years, Doris Gale Stanfill, and his daughters, Sonya Gale Stanfill Clark and Kris Stanfill Parrish; a niece, Cheryl Burns and nephew, William Bruce Stanfill; sister-in-law and husband, Martha Annette Carter and Charles DuRant; niece, Cindy Overstreet and nephew, Charles DuRant Jr.
At the age of 11, Stan spent a couple of years with his Grandma Hettie West in Lakewood, Ill., around the time of his Mother's death. He grew up and attended high school in Charleston, Mo. Like his older brother, William, Stan chose a military career joining the Naval Reserves in High School then transferring to the United States Air Force (USAF) and retiring from the USAF with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant.
Stan earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Wayland Baptist University while in the Air Force. His USAF career included assignments in and outside of the U.S. that include: Vietnam, Germany, Korea and Panama. He received multiple awards which include: Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medals, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Non-Commissioned Officers Military Education Ribbon, and Civil Engineering Foreman of the Year Award - Howard AFB, (Panama Canal Zone).
After retiring from the USAF, Stan's civilian career consisted of jobs supporting the Military, NASA and the corporate world. He managed and maintained government contracts, developed contract proposals and worked for Pan American World Services becoming Johnson Controls World Services, Emerson/Electro-test, and Burns and Roe until his final retirement in 2007.
A Memorial Service with Military Honors was conducted at 11a.m. on Veteran's Day, Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017, at the Wake Forest Historical Cemetery Columbarium.
