SCTC students earn district honors

SIKESTON - The Sikeston Career and Technology Center hosted the Skills USA Individual Welding district contest recently.

This contest included participants from six career and technology centers: Doniphan, New Madrid, Kennett, Pemiscot, Poplar Bluff and Sikeston. The top two places advance to the State contest at Linn State.

This was a timed event were students receive a set of detailed prints, raw materials, and three hours to finish it. Judges for the contest were: David Kennedy (metal weld), Patrick Nenninger (construction trailer specialist), and Shane Hughes (certified pipe and structural welder).

Students placing in the top three positions for individual welding received a prize package from Lincoln Electric and a scholarship from Missouri Welding Institute. The top two places in individual welding contest advance to the Skills USA State competition. The top three places in welding written technical and technical math advance to the Skills USA State competition.

Sixteen students participated in the individual welding contest. Sikeston was able to take home first and third place in the individual welding event, while Doniphan won second place.

More than 45 students also competed in a welding technical written and technical math test. In welding technical written, Sikeston won first (tie with Poplar Bluff), second and third place.

For technical math, Sikeston placed second. In the post-secondary welding technical written, Sikeston was able to bring home first place.
