CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. - It might look like a call from the Pemiscot Sheriff's Department, when the department's phone number shows up on the caller ID. However, if the caller demands money and threatens arrest, it is a scam.

Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Green reported his office and the Caruthersville Police have received several calls this week from citizens stating they received a call from the Sheriff's office phone number, 573-333-4101.

A person with a strong Middle Eastern accent, identifies himself as from the Sheriff's Office and asks for money and threatens the person with arrest if they did not comply, Greenwell said in a news release.

"This is a scam. Hang up. This office does not call asking for money, and does not threaten arrest for such a call," Greenwell emphasized.

He said the scammers are probably using a number generator to make it look like the call is from the Sheriff's Office.
