CHARLESTON, Mo. -- A check into a driver's safety led to the discovery of marijuana and several bottles of a controlled substance.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. Oct. 5 before Judge S. Rob Barker of Melissa Dawn Brown, who is charged with three felony counts of possession of a controlled substance, and the misdemeanors of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of up to 35 grams of marijuana and driving while intoxicated.

On Aug. 31 Chief Deputy Charlie Marcum responded to a call of a female, later identified as Brown, sitting in her vehicle on Janie Lane with her head down. Marcum reported the woman's eyes were glassy and she had difficulty standing when she exited the vehicle.

According to Mississippi County Sheriff Keith Moore, during Marcum's investigation, he located a pipe commonly associated with smoking illegal drugs, along with two clear plastic baggies containing a green leafy substance and several bottles of pills that are considered a control drug, and were not in the woman's name.

Bond was set at $50,000 cash or surety bond, and she remained in jail at press time.

Moore said he is thankful a concerned Mississippi County resident reported the suspicious activity, noting that it enabled the officer to take drugs off the street. Also, he added, he may have saved the driver or someone else from getting seriously hurt.
