SIKESTON -- A Canalou man faces felony charges for allegedly striking a man with an aluminum bat.

Donnie Ray Metheny Jr., 35, of Canalou is charged with the felonies of first degree assault and armed criminal action, according to online court records.

According to the probable cause affidavit by Scott County Sheriff's Department Detective Garrett Cook, at 12:50 a.m. Jan. 4, Scott County Deputy James Britton responded to the 1600 block of State Highway HH outside of Sikeston in reference to the report of a man who was hit in the head by a ball bat. Britton said upon his arrival, he spoke with the home owner who said her friend had been assaulted.

She said she and her friend were watching television when another friend who she identified as Metheny, arrived at the residence. She said all three of them watched TV for about 15 minutes and she got up to go to the bathroom. While in the bathroom, she said she heard a "ting" and someone moaning.

When she exited the bathroom, the woman said she found her friend lying on the couch, bleeding heavily from his head. She called 911 and while doing so, she said her friend said: "Donnie." "Bat," according to the probable cause statement.

The deputy told Cook he made contact with the man in the back of the ambulance. He said the man was very incoherent. When he asked the man what happened, the victim said: "Donnie hit me with a bat," according to the probable cause statement.

Britton said he then returned to the residence where he found the woman cleaning blood from the floor and couch, and he noticed she had pulled an aluminum bat out from under the couch the victim was found on, the probable cause said. The bat was secured as evidence.

At 9:45 a.m. Thursday, Cook said he spoke to the victim's mother who said her son was flown to a St. Louis hospital due to the severity of his injuries.

At 1:53 p.m. Thursday, Cook arrived at the woman's residence on State Highway HH to speak with her about what happened. The woman told him the same thing she told Britton. Cook also noted the woman said following the incident, Metheny was nowhere to be found.

Bond is set at $75,000 cash or surety and Metheny is to have no contact with the alleged victim. As of Monday afternoon, he was in custody in the Scott County Jail and scheduled to be arraigned at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Associate Division courtroom.
