Just before noon Sunday, June 3, a fire was reported at the Flying J Travel Center on Highway 80 at Matthews, Mo. The Matthews Fire Department was assisted by the Portageville Fire Department along with six other local departments in battling the blaze for several hours. No injuries were reported.

MATTHEWS, Mo. — Local fire fighters spent several hours Sunday trying to put out a fire at Flying J’s in Matthews.

The Matthews Fire Department was aided by Sikeston, New Madrid, Portageville, Dexter, Miner and Scott County Rural while attempting to extinguish the blaze that began around 11:30 a.m.

The building was a complete loss as the roof caved in, leaving only sections of the exterior walls.

Nobody was injured in the fire, however several fire fighters were treated for heat exhaustion. The cause of the fire was not yet known.
