CHARLESTON, Mo. — Garrett Joseph Shankle, 15, died Aug. 12, 2018, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.

Born Nov. 25, 2002, at Cape Girardeau, son of Thomas Joseph and Shelby Jeanine Burton Shankle of Charleston, he was preparing to enter ninth grade at Charleston High School. Garrett began his Junior Dragster racing career at the age of 9 years old as the youngest member of the Shankle Motorsports Racing Team. During his years of racing, he won many races and several points championships at Sikeston Dragstrip, Paducah, Ky., Beacon Raceway, Bonne Terre Dragstrip and other area tracks. He was a member of Team Beacon, Midwest Jr. Dragster Super Series and NHRA JR Dragster Racing League. He made several trips to the NHRA Eastern Conference Finals in Bristol, Tenn., and the NHRA Western Conference Finals in Tulsa, Okla., as well as, many other Jr. Dragster events. Garrett made his mark on the Jr Dragster world and will be missed by many.

Besides his father and mother, he is survived by three sisters, Misty (Tony) Long of Dexter, Billie Jo (Joe) Duenne and Kristen (Brian) Jones of East Prairie; his maternal grandparents, Joyce and Jim Abner of Charleston; paternal grandparents, Bill and Martha Shankle of Charleston; his aunts and uncles, Julia Burton (Michael Guerrieri), Kathy and Robert Renaud, Kenneth and Sheila Shankle and James and Pam Shankle and James Abner of Charleston; five nieces and three nephews; and a number of cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Jay Burton.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston, where services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. J. Robert Webster, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Charleston, will officiate.

Burial will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Charleston under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home.
