On Monday morning, Jan. 7, formal Mayor and alderman Floyd Simmons placed his name in the hat for the Mayor’s race. He joins Denis McCrate and Vince Berry. Filings for the April Municipal Election opened Tuesday, Dec. 11 and ended on January 15, 2019.
Denis McCrate is seeking his third two-year term as Portageville mayor.
However, after Monday night’s monthly meeting of the City Council, Vince Berry has decided not to run for Mayor and has taken his name out of the running.
A note from Berry reads, “I regret to announce that due to a new employment opportunity that has become available at my employer, Nucor Steel, I officially withdrawal my candidacy for the office of Mayor for the City of Portageville in the upcoming April 2019 election.
This employment possibility will require that I spend more time at work training and may require that I travel for the training. I believe this would inhibit my ability to perform the duties as Mayor effectively.
I look forward to continuing my duties as Alderman Ward II and working with our outstanding City Council to provide the exemplary service worthy of this great city.”
Now that just leaves incumbent McCrate and Simmons. It was 2014 when both candidates challenged each other for the Mayor's office.
Incumbents Lynn Doering and Ray Staffey are currently unopposed for Ward I and Ward II aldermen. also, Michele Crawford has filed to retain her seat as City Collector.
