FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. — Joseph Albert Dixon, 65, formerly of East Prairie, Mo., died Feb. 5, 2019, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.
Born April 16, 1953, in Charleston, Mo., son of the late John and Ella Mae Wilson Strayhorn, he had attended Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Wolf Island. He was a graduate of East Prairie High School and then attended School of the Ozarks in Branson, Mo., for two years where he was active in basketball, football and track. Afterward, he joined the United States Navy, serving on the USS Hewitt where he became an electrical technical equipment repairman. He received an honorable discharge after five years of service. He lived in San Diego, Calif.,for several years before relocating to Murphysboro, Ill., and Fairview Heights.
In additional to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Dixon, and one sister, Gloria Dixon. His brother, Donald Dixon, died Jan. 9, 2019.
Survivors include: six brothers, William Dixon of Kansas City, Kan., Oliver Dixon of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Robert (Carol) Dixon of Murphysboro, Benny (Micheal) Strayhorn of Jefferson City, Mo., and Roy (Angie) Dixon of Las Vegas, Nev.; and one sister, Deloris (Keith) Bulliner of Fairview Heights, Ill.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. until service time at noon Saturday at the Williams Funeral Chapel in Charleston, Mo.
Burial with full military rites will be at 12:30 p.m. in the Oak Grove Cemetery near Charleston.
