Stolen utility vehicle from Bernie located with broken tire in Tallapoosa
BERNIE, Mo. — A Kennett man faces burglary and stealing charges for his alleged involvement in the theft of a utility vehicle from a Bernie business.
Richard Marcus McCarthy, 30, of Kennett, was arrested and charged through the Stoddard County Prosecutor’s Office. He was charged with second degree burglary, stealing a murder vehicle and stealing, according to Bernie Chief of Police Justin K. Allen.
At about 6:20 a.m. Wednesday, the Bernie Police Department was dispatched to MFA Agriculture, located at 311 N. Drake St. in Bernie in reference to a burglary that occurred sometime in the night, according to the probable cause statement by Allen. Sgt. Eddie Mays made contact with business’ manager who said a 2012 Polaris Ranger along with several sets of power tools, Carhartt bibs and other various items were stolen.
By 10 a.m. a New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department reserve deputy contacted Allen to inform him he’d received information and located the Ranger which had a broken rear tire and it was stuck in the mud on an empty lot on Gerkin Street in Tallapoosa.
By 11:23 a.m. an officer with the Bernie Police Department responded to the scene on Gerkin Street where he was informed McCarthy was staying in the residence in front of the empty lot where the Ranger was found.
The officer made contact with the tenant of the residence and was granted permission into the residence to speak with McCarthy, who was sleeping in a bedroom. While waking up McCarthy, the officer located several Carhartt bibs matching the description of the stolen ones, all the stolen tools and a two-wheel dolly, according to Allen’s probable cause statement.
The officer also found a keyring hooked to McCarthy’s belt loop that had the key to the stolen Ranger and a key that fit a gate at MFA Bernie.
McCarthy was subsequently arrested and transported to the Bernie Police Department where in an interview with police he admitted to stealing the Ranger and various items.
Bond for McCarthy, who is on parole for burglary, was set at $12,500 cash only, and as of Friday, he was being held in the Bernie City Jail.
