NEW MADRID, Mo. — Harriet Shy Porter passed away April 6, 2019, at her home in New Madrid at the age of 91 years.
She was born Oct. 10, 1927, in New Madrid, to the late Arthur and Mildred Phillips Shy Sr. On Nov. 29, 1947, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, she married to Cyrus Porter, who survives of the home.
She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church. She was secretary at New Madrid R-1 School District until her retirement. She then worked for several years at the New Madrid Historical Museum.
She was a graduate of IC Catholic School, New Madrid, and Loretto Academy, Kansas City.
Survivors include: her children, Michael Porter of Poplar Bluff, Carolyn and Jerry Allred of Bowling Green, Ky., Joe Porter of New Madrid, Patty Frye of New Madrid, Erwin Porter of Cape Girardeau, Anita and John Hunter of St. Louis, Edward and Vicki Porter of New Madrid, Lynette and Tim Fowler of New Madrid; six sisters, Mary Sue Anton of League City, Texas, Laura Neal Sinex of Cape Girardeau, Clare Shy Winter of New Madrid, Alice Recker of Harrisonville, Loretto Alexander of New Madrid, Ruth Shy of Albuquerque, N.M.; one brother, Arthur Shy Jr. of Crystal, Mich.; 23 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and son-in-law, Roger "Sonny' Kirk, Jackson.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death one daughter, Kay Kirk; one sister, Josephine Richardson; one brother, Robert Shy; and one grandson, Daniel Curtis Porter.
Visitation is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Richards Funeral Home in New Madrid with the rosary recited at 7 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be at celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Madrid with the Rev. Dominic Ibok officiating.
Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery at New Madrid.
Pallbearers will be: John Kirk, Steven Kirk, Robert Frye, Chris "Chippy" Porter, Aaron Hunter, Andrew Hunter and Reese Porter.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Porter and Jason Kirk.
