Sikeston Cultural Update (June 2019)
SIKESTON DEPOT MUSEUM
& CULTURAL CENTER
Guest Artist: Don Sahli - Now thru June 27, 2019. Don Sahli’s pedigree as a painter started early, he began to show professionally in Taos, NM at the age of 15. At 19, Don was apprenticed to the Russian painter Sergei Bongart and was Bongart’s last scholarship student. Known as a southwestern painter living in New Mexico, Sahli moved to the mountains of Evergreen, Colorado in 1991. There he established a home studio, raised a family and opened Sahli School of Art in 1995. A plein air painter and teacher Don Sahli uses color as a tool to express form and emotion in his work. A prolific painter and teacher, Sahli travels widely, continually expanding his view and growing as a professional artist. Don has painted for over 40 years and teaching for 25. “Everybody looks for a label. I would like to be known as a painter – one who painted what he saw, and experienced while wandering around on their journey.” I am indebted to my “Guru” Sergei Bongart, I teach as he was taught. “I am a better painter because I teach; my students inspire me as we journey together. Together we are on a journey”. Please enjoy the view. The view can be powerful.

SIKESTON PUBLIC LIBRARY
The month of June will be busy at the Sikeston Public Library, as we have a lot of activity leading up to the kickoff of our summer reading program in early July. This year’s theme is “A Universe of Stories,” and we will be filling the library with space-related programs.
On Monday, June 3, the St. Louis Science Center will bring the Unisphere to the library. The Unisphere will replicate the night sky and explain the lore behind the naming of the constellations. This program will be held from 2:00-3:30 p.m. in the Draughon Room (lower level of the library).
On Monday, June 10, the Southeast Explorer bus returns with an exhibit commemorating the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. After touring the Explorer bus, children will be able to visit the Space Exploration room on the main level of the library. The Explorer bus will be here from 2:00-3:30 p.m. in the west parking lot of the library.
On Monday, June 17, we will host “Flights of Fancy” with Jay & Leslie. Jay and Leslie launch into summer reading with juggling, stories, orbits, and more bits to tickle your funny bone. The fun will be flying, and Goldilocks will be searching for a planet that is “just right.” Jay & Leslie will be presenting at 12:30 p.m. in the Draughon Room (lower level of the library).
On Monday, June 24, get ready for Chef Bananas! Chef Bananas will cook up a recipe that is out of this world. The presentation includes hot dogs, fire, carrots, frogs, cupcakes, balloons, and a load of BANANAS! His “Out of this World” program will put you on the hunt for cookbooks, magic books, and many more! This program will be presented at 12:30 p.m. in the Draughon Room (lower level of the library).
All four of the above programs are supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
In addition to these special events, we will also be hosting a hands-on space discovery exhibit in the McAmis Community Room (main level of the library). The exhibit opens on Monday, June 17, and will run through Friday, July 19, during regular library hours. Activities are based on our summer reading theme and include a solar system science viewer, solar system activity tub, cosmic rocket play, planet hop game, and much more. This exhibit is also supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
Following these fun programs, summer reading program kicks off during the first week of July.
Our teens (entering grade 6 and up) will be meeting from 1:30 – 3 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning on June 26. Each week, teens will explore a different theme, including the mythology of the stars, space adventure, time travel, and aliens.
Our book discussion group will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18. The group will be discussing Girls Burn Brighter by Shobha Rao. Participation in the group is free, and copies of the book are provided for library patrons.
