Kenneth Carrier with Tarpan Construction of Cotton Port, La., watches as a co-worker uses a bulldozer to push dirt as part of the preliminary work for a seepage remediation project under way along the levee at New Madrid. According to Jim Pogue with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Memphis District, the Corps had noticed when the Mississippi River is high at New Madrid, water was seeping under the levee and into a nearby ditch. Because the seepage could damage the levee, the Corps plans to install concrete pipes which will direct the water away from the ditch to a pumping station. The approximate $3.4 million project should be complete by December 2021.
