COVID-19 cases continue to increase in area

The number of positive COVID-19 cases in southeast Missouri continues to rise.

The Scott County Health Department is reporting three new cases on Tuesday, giving Scott County 110 positive cases. Of the three new cases, all three were females with one under the age of 19 and two between the ages of 60-69.

Five positive cases have recovered, leaving Scott County with 25 active cases and 75 recovered. The Scott County Health Department reports there have been 10 deaths.

According to the Mississippi County Health Department, the results are in from sentinel testing that was performed at the Southeast Correctional Center in Charleston last week. The testing yielded three new positive tests among inmates, making it 46 total inmates that have tested positive along with 19 staff members.

In the Mississippi County general population, the number of cases has increased from 11 to 13 over the weekend, giving Mississippi County 59 positive cases.

The New Madrid County Health Department is reporting 21 positive cases in New Madrid County with seven active. There has been one death in New Madrid County.

The Pemiscot County Health Department announced their fifth death due to COVID-19 late Tuesday afternoon. There are 89 positive cases in Pemiscot County with 27 of those active and 57 released from isolation.

According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Dunklin County saw an increase of one case Tuesday, giving the County 45 positive cases. There have been two deaths in Dunklin County.

The Stoddard County Health Department reported seven new cases Tuesday, increasing the number of total positive cases to 94. There are 56 active cases in Stoddard County with 33 recovered and five deaths.

DHSS also reports that Cape Girardeau County saw an increase of two cases Tuesday, making a total of 76 positive cases. The Cape Girardeau County Health Department is reporting three deaths.

The DHSS is reporting an increase of 249 cases in the last 24 hours with 10 additional deaths. To date, 13,575 Missourians have tested positive for the coronavirus while 783 have died related to COVID-19.

Local health departments are warning residents that the virus is still spreading through the area and everyone is asked to continue taking preventive actions to slow the spread. The Scott County Health Department recommends citizens who feel sick should stay home and that all residents should continue to practice good hygiene.

They encourage all residents to avoid socializing in groups that do not readily allow for appropriate social distancing and when in public individuals should maximize physical distance from others while minimizing travel to the extent possible.

The elderly or vulnerable populations should take enhanced precautionary measures to mitigate the risks of contracting COVID-19.

Those wanting to be tested for COVID-19 can take part in free drive-thru coronavirus testing from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Arena Park in Cape Girardeau. Registration is required but the testing is available to all Missouri residents.
