SIKESTON — The Sikeston area if full of beautiful views, historic sites, great restaurants and agriculture makes the area unique. A new brochure highlights these spots and maps routes that will help those looking for day trips.

The Sikeston CVB, the tourism division of the Chamber, published the “Sikeston Road Trips in Southeast Missouri” brochure that is available at the Sikeston Regional Chamber office.

The brochure was created to give visitors and locals suggested day trip itineraries. Each tour starts and ends in Sikeston and features some the area’s top restaurants.

“I’ve wanted to do this for a while and it was on the back burner so to speak,” said Kathy Medley, executive vice president of the Sikeston Regional Chamber and Economic Development. “But with COVID-19 and everyone looking for more outdoor activities I thought this is the perfect time to do this project.”

The brochure features three different routes highlighting several attractions and the area’s diverse landscape. There is a northern route with 17 sites that extends from Sikeston to Scott City and back and there is a southern route that goes from Sikeston to New Madrid and back with 15 different sites. A western route goes from Sikeston to Puxico and back with 14 different sites.

“It took a few weeks to create the routes and gather the right pictures,” Medley said. “I had some in my photo library, but needed more from the surrounding areas. Larry Braun with Larry Braun Photography let me use some of his photos and that really helped. Ashton Schlitt with Moll Printing was also great to work with. She did an awesome job on the layout and design.”

Medley said she hopes that the attractions are unique and interesting to the community.

“Sometimes we forget about the attractions and assets that we have in our own backyard,” Medley said. “The Sikeston Recreation Complex and Veterans Park are great outdoor places to enjoy or to take visitors during the holidays. And of course the landscape itself is an attraction, from the rolling hills to the north, the lowlands and Mississippi River to the south and east of us, and attractions like Mingo Wildlife Refuge and the Stars and Stripes Museum to our west, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.”

For those visiting the area there is also hotel discounts for the Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express.

Medley said the reception for the brochure has been great and is available at the SRC office.

“I initially got a limited number of the brochures printed because I planned to push it more in the social media-digital format,” Medley said. “We have it available on our website, Facebook page and Instagram (visitsikestonmo). But the printed version turned out so good that I’ve already ordered more to distribute.”
