CHARLESTON, Mo. — Charleston R-1 School District dismissed early Thursday with all in-person students attending school virtually from home through Jan. 29.

The temporary districtwide closure will allow for deep cleaning and social distancing following a spike in positive COVID-19 cases, according to a letter to parents from Charleston R-1’s central office.

The decision to close buildings down was made in cooperation with the Mississippi County Health Department, the letter said.

“Principals and teachers from each building will reach out to families with any special instructions,” the letter said. ‘ Students are expected to complete assignments as provided through Google Classroom, Seesaw, etc.

Daily meals will be available at 11 a.m. through the MealsAway drive-thru, located behind the CHS building.

Schools affected include Charleston High School, Charleston Middle School and Hearnes Elementary.

“This will affect in-person students only. JaysAway 100% Virtual students are not affected whatsoever,” the district said. “At this time, all activities, including games, will not be held as planned.”

All in-person students will return to class Feb. 1.
