New Madrid lighting contest deadline nears

NEW MADRID, Mo. - New Madrid residents are urged to show their holiday spirit as part of Beta Sigma Phi’s first ever lighting contest.

The local women’s organization is hosting a lighting contest for residences and businesses as a way to showcase the community and the creativity of its residents, according to Beta Sigma Phi member Jerica Fincher Branum.

“We kind of talked about this as a way to become a little more community involved as well as a way to raise money,” Branum said.

She explained the cost to enter is $20 for individual residences and $30 for a business. Depending on the number of entries, first, second and third place will be awarded in each category.

“Right now we are starting out small with it being new but we are trying to get the word out and hoping for a good turnout,” she said.

Those wanting to participate have until Dec. 17 to request a form and submit their entry fee. Forms are available on the sorority’s Facebook page, from Beta Sigma Phi members or by emailing Branum at jericabranum@gmail.com.

Money raised by the event will go back to the community through the many donations provided by the group.

“We do a lot of fundraisers to support the community. Recently we donated to “Shop With a Cop” and have adopted two children through the school. We do a some donations anonymously, too,” Branum said. “We are a sisterhood. We have a good time but at the same time we are community-minded and work to give back to our community.”
