CHARLESTON, Mo. — John Robert Barrett, age 76, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2021, at his home in Charleston.

He was born Sept. 26, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late John Alexander and Ann Perry Barrett. John graduated from Brentwood High School in 1967 and attended Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri.

John worked for the Norfolk and Western Railroad in St. Louis, Missouri until 1975, when he moved to Charleston and managed East Prairie Lumber Company. In 1986, he started B&C Building Materials in Paducah, Kentucky, where he worked until his retirement in 2008. He was a member of the Charleston Methodist Church.

John had a beautiful voice; he was a sports enthusiast and an excellent cook. He especially loved hunting on Big Lake and fishing at his special “summer place,” the family cottage, in Ontario, Canada, on Lake Erie.

On Dec. 28, 1968, he married Pam Conn, who survives of the home.

Also surviving are one daughter, Heather (Matt) Barrett Shelton of Jackson, Tennessee; and one son, Jonathan Barrett of St. Petersburg, Florida; two grandchildren, Ella Shelton and Barrett Shelton of Jackson, Tenessee; two sisters, Barbara Dethlefson of Bakersfield, California, and Carol Johnson of Charlotte, North Carolina.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2021, at the United Methodist Church in Charleston. The pastor, Rev. J. Robert Webster, will officiate.

Interment will be private.

McMikle Funeral Home of Charleston is in charge of arrangements.
