COVID-19 spread continues to increase in Scott County

The spread of COVID-19 is continuing across the area and the signs could be seen Monday at the Missouri Delta Medical Center rapid testing site.

Cars were lined up along North Main Street in Sikeston, with residents waiting to receive a rapid COVID-19 test. Sikeston DPS officers were needed to help control traffic at the site.

The need for the testing comes as a surge of positive cases has swept across the area. According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, 420 cases have been reported in Scott County in the last week, a 30% increase from the week prior. There is a 53% seven-day positivity rate in Scott County, which is the second most in the state. Three deaths have also been reported in the last week in Scott County.

In Mississippi County, 55 new cases were reported last week, a 12.2% increase from the week before. The positivity rate is 21.1% and no deaths were reported last week.

The MDHSS is reporting 103 cases in the last week in New Madrid County, a 50.5% drop from the week before. The positivity rate 28% and no deaths were reported last week.

In Stoddard County, 127 new cases were reported in the last seven days, a drop of 4.5%. The seven-day positivity rate is 33.3% in Stoddard County and no deaths have been reported.

Statewide, there have been 52,958 cases reported in the last week with 30 deaths.

The rise in COVID-19 cases locally has impacted schools as well as the East Prairie and Sikeston R-6 School Districts have went to distance learning. The Sikeston R-6 District will be back to in-person learning on Wednesday.

The Center for Disease Control recommends getting vaccinated, get a booster dose when eligible, wearing masks in indoor public settings and getting tested or take a self-test before gathering.
