CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. — A Texas man is in custody after a murder in Caruthersville.

According to Tony Jones, Caruthersville city marshal, Eddie DeWayne Hunt Jr. of Mesquite, Texas, formerly of Hayti Heights, Missouri, is accused of shooting Wayneasha Carter, 23, of Caruthersville.

Jones said Carter had stepped out of her vehicle and walked over to talk to several subjects in the roadway in front of 409 E. 13th St. in Caruthersville June 11 when shots rang out from the side of the residence, located at 408 E. 13th St.

Carter was shot and went to the ground. She was then transported to the Pemiscot Memorial Hospital in Hayti, Missouri, where she was pronounced dead.

An investigation by the Caruthersville Police Department, Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Office and Missouri State Highway Patrol led to the development of suspects, leading to Hunt being identified as the alleged shooter.

A probable cause affidavit was submitted to the Pemiscot County Prosecuting Attorney and a warrant was subsequently issued for Hunt’s arrest. Hunt is charged with first degree murder and armed criminal action.

Hunt is currently in custody and being held on no bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at the Pemiscot County Justice Center.
