An 18-year-old Charleston man has been charged with murder in the deadly shooting of a Hayti man after a Caruthersville football game Friday.

According to online court records, Zy’Quan Williams was charged with first degree murder and armed criminal action Thursday morning and is being held in the Pemiscot County Justice Center with no bond.

Williams was arrested Wednesday after a traffic stop by Cape Girardeau Police and the Missouri Highway Patrol.

He was then transported to the Charleston Department of Public Safety for questioning in connection to the shooting Friday night, in which Hershel Grant, 19, of Hayti, was killed.

Officers responded to the 1500 block of Schult Avenue, near Caruthersville High School at 9:31 p.m. Friday, just after a high school football game against New Madrid County Central ended.

According to police reports, as fans were leaving the game and school property, gunshots rang out northeast of the school on Schult Avenue. Police stressed the incident did not happen on Caruthersville School District property.

Upon arrival, officers discovered 19-year-old Herschel Grant Jr. of Hayti, Missouri, laying on the ground, bleeding profusely from multiple gunshot wounds.

Grant was transported to the Pemiscot Memorial Hospital in Hayti, where he was treated and then transported by air to Regional One Health in Memphis, Tennessee. Grant died from his injuries at 3:26 a.m. Saturday.

Caruthersville is set host Dexter in another football game Friday night at 7 p.m. There will be heightened security measures for the game.
